2021 saw a lot of unique and inventive indie games hit the market. From a game that is inspired by the aesthetics of an adult coloring book to a puzzle-solver about moving from place to place, indie developers are discovering new and novel ways to tell memorable and emotional stories. Here are some of the best ones we’ve got:

  1. Unpacking

Unpacking is a short puzzle game reminiscent of Tetris and home décor games. You follow a protagonist as they grow up, attend college, move out of their parent’s place, move in with a partner, break up and get their own home, and you learn all this from the items you unpack from boxes in each location. If you love sorting and organizing things, this game will definitely soothe your OCD impulses.

  1. Inscryption

Inscryption initially starts out as a deck-building game with a very D&D aesthetic but then quickly evolves to other things. Honestly, instead of reading spoilers, just give this game a try, and before you know it, you’ll be hooked.

If an adult coloring book sounds like your idea of relaxation, then you must check out Chicory: A Colorful Tale. In it, you play as an anthropomorphic dog exploring a black-and-white world with a paintbrush. The more you explore the environment, the more you’ll find out why the colors disappeared and how you can paint the world anew.

  1. Before Your Eyes

This game uses eye-tracking technology to tell the story of Benjamin Brynn’s transition to the afterlife. The player’s eye movements and blinking are tracked as they explore Benjamin’s memories, although the game can also be played by mouse clicks instead of the webcam. Overall, Before Your Eyes offers a genuinely cathartic experience.
